Victimae paschali laudes  (8 part choir (SSAATTBB))

I originally wrote this piece in 1996 while studying composition with Gregory Youtz at Pacific Lutheran University, and made minor revisions in 2014 for this program.  I chose to set the Victimae paschali laudes chant because of its sheer beauty and expressive potential.   I found that the text offers a fully realized drama: lines of praise, heartfelt prayers for mercy, and the hope of the resurrection, with a thread of joy woven throughout.   I first conceived the piece for men’s chorus with soprano solo, but chose to expand to a mixed choir sound while preserving the soprano solo for Mary Magdalene’s words.

The piece was performed by the Byrd Ensemble on February 1, 2014 at St. Joseph Parish in Seattle, WA.
